Community Policy

Last updated: July 12, 2024

This policy highlights what to expect and what will be expected of you as a member of the UX Tree community. This policy is a living document, and it applies to all Mentors, Mentees, Volunteers and Ambassadors across entire Europe.

UX Tree community

At UX Tree, we have a mission to enable professional growth for every person. Everyone deserves access to opportunities that can empower them to create a better life. The Community policy was developed with a goal of making every experience within our Community safe, respectful, and positive. The Community is here to help you to inspire, share knowledge and support each other.

Mentor standards

Mentoring means supporting and encouraging people to manage their own learning in a way that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be. We want to give clear guidelines, so you know what it means to be an UX Tree Mentor. We request that all mentors meet basic requirements listed below.

  • Mentors should have a minimum of 3 years of experience in UX, working in senior role or above. They should be based in Europe and be fluent in English.
  • Responding quickly when mentees reach out shows marks the start of a good relationship. We ask mentors to respond to mentee within 24 hours max.
  • We ask that you avoid canceling confirmed meetings unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Tips for developing the relationship with your Mentee

  1. Teach your mentees how to get the most from you: what expertise you actually have, why you’re mentoring them, the boundaries you want to set, your pet peeves, and your typical styles of communicating and thinking.
  2. Spend time getting to know each other and building the relationship before starting with the assignment
  3. At the beginning of your mentoring sessions, enjoy some small talk and ask mentees to give you an update on their lives, projects, and objectives.
  4. Offer to tell your career story in some detail. How did you start your career? What changes did you make along the way? Include high and low points and how these learning experiences helped you.
  5. Help your mentees clarify their personal visions—what they would like to be/do/own/influence/be with/be remembered for in the next one to five years.
  6. Suggest that your mentees choose one to three objectives, preferably skills, to work on with you: one of their strengths and one or two of their growth areas.
  7. Return your mentees’ phone calls and emails within 24 hours whenever possible, even to say “I got your message and will get back to you.”
  8. Have your mentees teach you something.
  9. Ask mentees to give you specific feedback—positive and corrective—on something you wrote or on an action you took.
  10. Focus on mentee’s needs, look to improve their prospects

Mentee standards

We want to give clear guidelines, so you know what it means to be an UX Tree Mentee. We request that all mentees meet basic requirements listed below.

  • Mentees should have a degree or diploma in UX, working or looking for a job. They should be based in Europe and be fluent in English.
  • Respecting and appreciating UX Tree Mentor who volunteer their time and effort is extremely important.
  • We ask that you avoid canceling confirmed meetings unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Community principles

What is expected

  • Respect: Be respectful in all interactions and communications, including ideas, styles and perspectives. This is especially true when debating different merits.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Everyone should feel safe to participate, introduce new ideas, and inspire others regardless of background, gender, marital status, religion, geography or other aspects of diversity.

What we do not tolerate

  • Derogatory language / personal attacks: Attacking someone for their opinions, beliefs, and ideas is unacceptable. Hurtful or harmful language is not acceptable.
  • Spam or Phishing: Scheduling review sessions for commercial reasons or attempts to abuse the mentorship platform, such as driving traffic to other sites or unrelated market products; or making false claims against other community members, is not acceptable. This includes asking for referrals and or job opportunities as these requests are subjective, and Mentors are under no obligation to do so.
  • Sexual attention: Sexualised comments that are not acceptable, sharing or distributing sexual jokes or imagery.

Reporting violations

Reporting violations of these guidelines can be done by sending an email to info@ux-tree.com. Please include a detailed description of the violation and any relevant evidence or context to assist us in addressing the issue effectively.
