Improving the single ingredient and batch meal functionality of the MyFitnessPal App
This case study was written by Lachlan Phelan [mentored by Sara Lovic]
Overview
Released in 2005, Myfitnesspal was ahead of its time. Leading the market for years, as the most well known calorie/food tracking app out there. They are still the most widely known app in this sector.
- Over 200 million registered users worldwide.
- The app is available in over 20 languages.
My Role: UX Designer/UX Researcher
Project length: 4 months
Background
The initial reasoning behind selecting Myfitnesspal was from personal use. I’ve used this app daily for almost 2 years and found the user experience to be counterintuitive and confusing at times.
From a business stakeholder point of view, it is the most widely known app in the calorie tracking sector, but things have started to change due to poor upkeep and innovation of their design and user experience. From what I came to learn their popularity does not equal superiority in design.
