About

“Hey, it’s Conchúr here! I am Product Designer at Hibernia Venture Labs, a Venture Capital firm who helps startups at all stages of their journey. I have a background in Industrial Design & Marketing which has given me a unique perspective on researching, building and launching products.

Over the last couple of years I have been focused on web based products but have been moving into mobile design with my recent launch of Team Taca. Through the years I have had some amazing mentors who really shaped the way I looked at problems and products. My aim with becoming a mentor is to pass on this knowledge as well as breaking down my own experiences so I can help the next batch of designers to learn and grow.”

What led you to the world of UX?

“Initially I completed a degree in Industrial Design which is the design of physical products. When I finished my degree I moved into Marketing and spent the first couple of years trying to find my calling. Then I found my space, website design!

While working in marketing I got really good at designing websites but it always frustrated me that everyone just wanted to jam pack the site with words. This is where I found UX and came back to my routes in Product Design and completed my diploma with the UX Design Institute.

Over the last couple of years I have had some amazing mentors who have helped me to improve my processes. I have also found some amazing mentors through podcasts, Youtube Videos and LinkedIn. The web is a treasure trove of amazing advice.”

What advice do you have for future mentees and UX designers?

“I have 3 simple pieces of advice for any Junior Designers out there:

1. Network – letting managers and owners know who you are can go a long way to landing a job or leading them to recommended you.

2. Build anything – it is impossible to know everything, design and build a product so you can learn what roadblocks you might encounter. You want experience? Create it yourself.

3. Absorb good content – change all of your social media feeds into content that will make you a better designer. Or create a separate design account for Instagram and TikTok.

The more good design you consume, the better you will be at spotting it in your own designs.”
