I’m Samuel Payne, the Head of Content Design, UX at Google. I decided to be a mentor because I enjoy it, I find that I learn a lot from mentees and a lot about myself when mentoring people. I also feel an obligation to help the next generation of talent embrace UX—and those of us who are a bit more senior are responsible for ensuring the next generation is as diverse as possible.

What do you love the most about UX?

UX is ultimately about people. How we think, how we act and how we feel when we act. It’s a profession that relies on empathy and cultural sensitivity—it’s an art. It’s a way of putting yourself into something and seeing how other people respond. It’s magic.
