Let me tell you a story about UX Tree and how everything started.
Being a a junior UX designer once myself, I’m very familiar with the situation where getting a job is a challenge because you’ve no experience. Not to mention that getting any experience is difficult because you cannot find a job. It’s a vicious circle, I know.
When I started my UX career, finding a mentor wasn’t as easy as it is today. Nowadays, there are plenty of UX Mentorship programs junior designers can apply to, both paid and free ones. However, this does not necessarily mean all these programs are good.
Back in winter 2020, I was offered a mentor position. I was thrilled knowing I could help someone with less experience, so I accepted it.
However, when it started, I realised that this program had no plan or structure. My mentee and I were left on our own. We met weekly, and our one-hour sessions were filled with questions and answers. It has been highly challenging to keep track of everything we’ve covered.
Being a UX designer, I immediately noticed this as something I could improve. Shortly after that, I decided to create a different mentorship program with a start and finish. A program with goals and tick boxes because everyone likes them. Or is it just me? 🙂
And this is how the UX Tree was born. My idea was to pair Mentees with an expert designer who would be their Mentor. Each Mentee would have to complete one project, writing a case study where they’d describe all the work they’ve carried out. Mentees would receive ongoing design feedback from the assigned Mentors and peer support from our community on Slack.
Over time, UX Tree has grown into much more than just a mentorship program. What started as a single initiative to support budding UX designers has now expanded into a platform offering:
- 3 Mentorship Programs designed to cater to different career levels and goals:
- Product Design for Beginners
- UX Mentorship for Juniors and Designers who want to upskill
- UX Strategy for Designers who want to move to the Lead or Manager roles
- 2 Short Online Courses for those looking to upskill or focus on specific areas of UX:
- UX Fundamentals for UX Researchers, Developers, Project Managers
- AI in UX Design for everyone who wants to learn how AI is affecting UX
- UX Recruitment Services to bridge the gap between companies seeking talent and designers looking for the right opportunity.
- In-House Training to help businesses strengthen their teams’ UX knowledge and processes.
While the mentorship program remains at the heart of what we do, I’m thrilled to see how UX Tree is becoming a hub for learning, growth, and connection in the design community.
